CREATING A COASTAL RETREAT

I believe everyone can agree 2020 with the COVID-19 pandemic with homeschooling, working from home and not knowing if normal will ever be a common term again is stressful.  But! allowing yourself to have a retreat, a place to step into and feel comfort is absolutely important.  When I think of what comes to mind when I think of retreat....It is the Ocean!

You may be saying, I don't live on the beach or have a water view home?  Well does it really matter if you take 2020 to a whole new level.  Make it about simplicity, when it comes to stepping out of your normal day to day chaos.  With a little thinking outside of the box, you can get the tranquil presence of serenity that you due in a coastal home in your home no matter where it is located.

CREATING A COASTAL RETREAT

1. Coastal Retreat Colors for 2020

Colors for this year focus on the natural, muted and unassuming.  While you may be able to leave the ocean waves, salt grass, or visiting pelican to be the center focus view of your design if you are graved with the opportunity to own a beach or bay front home.  But if you don't allow your home to be the center focus point to utilize the natural tones of the coast in your unimagined space when it comes to your design.

Airy relaxed spaces allow everyone to truly be on vacation everyday! Try to incorporate these colors into your upcoming design focus to give that natural, serene, coastal vibe to any space.

 2. Furniture Styles

Let your interior designer emerge as when it comes to coastal retreat this is one of the only times you can utilize a mixed media from contemporary, modern, farmhouse, and more into one space.  What better place to start studying and exploring than HGTV the #1 go to for everyone's list of top design options.  While looking through I found that the 2020 HGTV Dream Home is a perfect example of the ability to create the perfect coastal retreat without being near the water.  This charming coastal escape on Hilton Head Island, SC has the interior touches that fit perfectly for this write-up.

Look at each selected piece of furniture and decide what works for you. Simplicity and comfort is the key to this coastal-retreat style. Think low slung furniture with clean lines, natural materials and over sized cushions for the ultimate lounging experience.

Start your pinterest board and allow your unimagined space to become a reality.

3. Fabrics

In a coastal retreat design texture is important when you relax your colors with subdued choices.  You can create depth and excite a room with more than just pops of color.  Get creative! Washed, crumpled linens, natural fibers and heavy woven knits should take center stage in your coastal retreat look. Add a touch of texture and pop with a boho style textured and tasseled cushion, a chunky knit sweater throw or even a tasseled turkish towel.  Rugs with pops of color, woven wall hangings, touches of iron/metal accents and heavy draped curtains to finish off with a layer of warmth to finalize your coastal serenity.

4. Lighting

Creating a coastal ambiance makes lighting a key point in your unimaged space design.  Coastal lighting is all about light, bright spaces and embracing natural light when possible. Lots of windows, skylights, glass doors, including hallways, stairwells, and showers. Natural light always improves a mood, but sometimes isn't an option. So create with three types of lighting ambient, task, and accent installing dimmers to recessed lighting helps to create task and accent, adding a corner lamp create ambient, adding an edison bulb creates ambient and accent.  Focus on these three agendas and you are on your way to coastal perfection.

5. Finishing Style Touches

Remember this design is about simplicity! Turning your home into a coastal retreat is about getting in with nature, soft furniture and furnishings focused around raw materials and fabrics is key.  Simplicity is key to finishing your design with your big items such as your sofa, coffee table, sofa table and dining table.  Then layer with pillows, throws, rugs and wall art.  Use larger greenery for pops of color while placing them in woven baskets. Seaside inspired prints help to bring that relaxing vibe into your retreat and natural pieces such as clay vases, woven baskets on a self, and a piece of coral for added decor can never lead you wrong in finalizing your perfect unimagined space.
